Abstract
A new orthorhombic (possibly monoclinic) phase has been observed and analysed in the TaN system around the composition Ta4N with lattice parameters a = 5.16 Å, b = 9.33 Å, c = 4.94 Å. Peculiar domain configurations as a consequence of the hexagonal to orthorhombic phase transformation have been analysed in detail. The coexistence of coherent reflection twins and rotation twins has been justified on the basis of minimization of the strain energy in complex domain boundary configurations. The particular domain boundary intersections formed by the phase transformation in this system are not a particular effect but have also been observed in other systems.
