Abstract
The emergence of Targeted Radionuclide Therapy (TRT) marks a transformative advance in nuclear medicine, offering highly effective and localized treatments for difficult-to-treat cancers. Yet the full potential of TRT remains out of reach de to major challnges in isotope supply, clionical implementation, workforce, safety and regulatory frameworks. To address some of these barriers, the EC has launched the SECURE project, aiming to reinforce strategic autonomy, enhance therapeutic innovation, and ensure safety in the deployment of next-generation medical radionuclides.
A recent expert workshop, hosted by SECURE and attended by nearly 50 stakeholders across research, industry, and policy, mapped out these challenges and outlined key actions required to advance nuclear medicine. The discussions made clear that, while Europe is a global leader in this field, sustaining that position will require collaborative efforts, harmonized regulatory implementation, and targeted investment in technology and people.
