Alpha branching ratio of ²²⁷Ac

Abstract

A standard solution containing 504 ± 4 μg of actinium has been prepared by dissolving a weighed amount of purified Ac₂O₃. The ²²⁷Ac concentration has been confirmed by microgravimetry and microphotometric EDTA titration with Arsenazo III as indicator. Starting from a known amount of this standard solution the alpha-branching factor of ²²⁷Ac has been determined by three independent methods based respectively on the alpha-measurement of daughter-free ²²⁷Ac, the alpha-spectrometric determination of the daughter activities in an equilibrium mixture and the observation of the daughter activity ingrowth immediately after the ²²⁷Ac purification. The weighted mean value of the branching factor obtained was 1·359 ± 0·14%.
