An introduction to radiation effects on optical components and fiber optic sensors

    Research outputpeer-review

    Abstract

We review the effects of ionizing radiation on various types of optical components including optical fiber sensors and summarize some of their applications in particular environments where the presence of energetic radiation is a concern. Research on nuclear radiation effects on optical components has been initiated a long time ago, in the early days essentially for military purposes. Today however advanced photonic technologies for optical communication and sensing are being introduced in many other environments where the presence of highly energetic radiation is a concern.
