    Abstract

At present, an estimated 3,500,000 chemical substances are known, of which 25,000 are produced in significant quantities. About 25,000 new substances are added to the total list annually; of these, about 500 will be produced industrially. It is of great importance to protect our environment from this invasion by identifying those substances which are mutagenic. Laboratory tests for these identifications are available. Few of these chemical products have been studied so far. In view of the magnitude of the task, the practitioner of industrial medicine can play a large role in the reduction of risks by organizing systematic cytogenic studies in all areas where serious risks are present.
