Abstract
The fIoating-wire method is used to study the proton-optics
of a deflecting magnet with circular pole shoes and non-uniform
field . The conditions under which the system acts as a prism
are determined.
The question of wire-stabiIIty is emphasized . It is found
that, for our special experimental conditions, there exist three
equilibrium configurations of equaI wire-current connecting two given
points . Two of them are stable while the other is metastable .
