Abstract
The materials testing reactor BR2 utilises fuel elements formed from thin walled
concentric tubes, cooled by water at 13 atmospheres pressure, whose velocity between the fuel tubes is about 11 m/s, The principal operating limit is the maximum permitted heat flux per unit area at the surface of the fuel plates.
A literature search has enabled valid rules to be established for the thermodynamic phenomena caused by boiling.
A computer code BELGEX has been set up in order to calculate the critical heat flux and to assess the influence of variations due to measuring errors and to the tolerances on fuel element dimensions.
The results presented deal only with stable conditions ; a subsequent report will deal with the unstable operating conditions.
