Abstract
The SCK•CEN provides a calibration service for neutron monitors using a 252Cf source located in a facility for nuclear calibrations. Since the determined calibration factor should not depend upon the irradiation facility, corrections are to be made for neutron scattering. There are generally three techniques to correct for the effects of scattered neutrons: the semi-empirical, the polynomial fit and the shadow cone technique. In the calibration facility of the SCK•CEN the source is located quite near a comer of the room, giving rise to a non-uniformity of the scattered component. This study was set up to investigate the effect of this non-uniformity on the validity of the three correction methods. A Studsvik 2202D neutron monitor was used for the experiments. The results were also compared with the results from a numerical modellisation of the neutron transport with the Tripoli-3D code.
