    Abstract

This Milestone briefly describes the progress of the field studies to characterize the potential epigenetic changes in organisms continuously exposed to contamination within the Chernobyl exclusion zone. This research is part of the task 4.1 related to Initial Research Activity and involved four partners (SCK •CEN, NMBU, NERC, IRL). Three different biological models were initially chosen to perform the field studies: earthworm, frogs and the plant Arabidopsis thaliana.
The Milestone mainly reports the results of pilot fieldworks performed to validate the main choices (abundance and distribution of the selected biological models within the Chernobyl exclusion zone) and to select the study sites (gradient of contamination). The final strategy based on the conclusion of prospective fieldworks, is also described and will be implemented during the next fieldworks (spring/automn 2016).
