Abstract

The uranium-carbon phase diagram at low carbon concentration was determined by saturation experiments, thermal analyses and metallography. The system has an eutectic point of 0.98 at % carbon at 1116.6° C and two eutectoid reactions: U(γ) /ag U(β) + UC and U(β) /ag U(α) + UC, at 771.8° C, and 665.9° C, respectively, 3.0° and 1.8° C below the transformation temperatures of the pure metal. The gamma solubility decreases from 0.30 ± 0.075 at % at the eutectic temperature to 0.09 ± 0.04 at % at the eutectoid temperature. The solubility of carbon in beta uranium is probably less than 10 ppm by weight, in alpha uranium less than 3 ppm.
