CORALUS: an integrated in situ test on the corrosion of alpha-active (SON68) HLW glass

    Abstract

    As part of the study of the performance of the French R7T7 HLW glass in underground disposal conditions, integrated in situ corrosion tests with alpha-doped SON68 glass samples were performed. Two test tubes have been dismantled, and the glass and clay samples have been analysed (mass loss, SEM, EDX, SIMS,…). The results on glass corrosion respond to the expectations and agree with results from laboratory tests and modelling predictions. The glass alteration is about two orders of magnitude higher at 90 °C than at 30 °C. The addition of powdered glass frit to a Ca-bentonite backfill reduces the glass alteration by two orders of magnitude in comparison with the more aggressive backfill, dried Boom Clay. The advantage and limitations of integrated in situ tests are discussed.
