Abstract
This paper reviews the situation concerning research and development of water desalination processes based on freezing. In the first section a classification of the different freezing processes is given, with special emphasis on the way by which the heat transfer occurs during crystallisation. The different operations occurring in the freezing processes are summarised. Finally, as an example, the principle of the secondary refrigerant freezing method is elaborated. The second part describes the combination of seawater desalination and gasification of LNG. Special attention is given to three main possibilities of this combination, namely: (1) heat transfer techniques; (2) energetic coupling; and (3) hybrid coupling.
