Evaluation method for the environmental risk associated with radioactive liquid discharges from the Belgian nuclear power plants of Doel and Tihange : principles, equations and parameters

    Research outputpeer-review

    Abstract

SCK•CEN was asked to perform an environmental impact and risk assessment resulting from the liquid radioactive discharges from the Belgian Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). In this report we briefly present the principles and steps of a phased Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA). The case studies – the Tihange and Doel NPP - are presented and for both sites information is provided on the source term (discharge limits, actual releases, site monitoring data) and fauna and flora where upon the selection of reference organisms is based. We discuss the general approach taken for the ERA: the conceptual models for transport in the aquatic environment and transfers in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the dosimetric calculations for the reference fauna and flora. Equations and associated parameter values are also provided. All this information will be the basis for the deterministic risk assessment for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems at the level of screening at a very conservative or a more realistic level performed with the ERICA tool.
