Experimental program for demonstrating the timely insertion of safety rods in MYRRHA

Research outputpeer-review

Abstract

Compared to the already tested control rods, the safety rods in MYRRHA incorporate two innovative aspects, namely the use of a tungsten ballast for fail-safe insertion, and a pneumatic system for fast actuation. An experimental program, currently in its early stages, aims to confirm the insertion time of less than 1.0 seconds. Separate effects are being investigated to providing relevant boundary conditions to a detailed CFD model focusing on the LBE flow. Prototypical insertion tests using the COMPLOT facility shall be completed within the European project ANSELMUS, starting in September 2022. After proof-or-principle, reliability tests shall be performed using the same experimental setup. In a later stage, successful insertion in seismic conditions needs to be demonstrated as well, in a different test facility.
