Fibre-optic gamma-flux monitoring in fission reactor by means of Cerenkov radiation

    Abstract

We demonstrate the possibility to use the Cerenkov radiation to monitor the gamma-flux in a mixed radiation field. The system employs a radiation resistant pure silica glass fibre to measure the radioluminescence at 1000 nm. The measurement of the gamma flux is an important aspect in the experimental design of radiation testing in material testing fission reactor because it governs the heat generation in the irradiation channel in which the experience is loaded. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated that Cerenkov radiation can be effectively used to monitor the reactor power which is proportional to the gamma flux. The system advantageously employs a low-OH fibre coil that is installed at the time of the experiment preparation and relies on a simple measurement of the Cerenkov radiation at 1 μm where the RIA is minimal. In the case of the fission reactor the Cerenkov radiation results exclusively from the generation of Compton electrons caused by the gamma field. Therefore, this approach provides a mean to measure the gamma-flux with an excellent discrimination level against neutron radiation. The same principle could be also applied for the power monitoring of fusion reactor.
