Abstract
Demographic growth, urban concentration, growing energy demands and excessive consumerism are examined in the light of increasing air pollution. The principal atmospheric pollutants, dust, SO2, nitrogen oxides, CO and CO2 are reviewed with regard to their sources and effects on man and the environment. Man's ability to adapt biologically to the degradation of his environment is discussed with consideration to the political and economic factors that influence the success or failure of any attempts to improve the quality of the environment, particularly the atmosphere. Suggested solutions are also presented and discussed.
