Abstract
The presence of several sugars found by paper chromatography in the extract of gamma-irradiated wood of Fagus silvatica L., suggests a possible mechanism of depolymerization of the polysaccharidic chains (celluloses and hemicelluloses) and probably a further degradation of the sugars thus formed to monoses of lower molecular weight (pentoses, tetroses and trioses).
