    Abstract

This report summarizes the activities performed in 2006 by SCK•CEN under the common denominator of the application of the Master Curve approach to fracture toughness data obtained at loading rates higher than the quasi-static range presently envisaged by the ASTM E1921-05 standard. Obviously, a very important case is represented by instrumented impact tests performed on precracked Charpy specimens with loading rates in the order of 10^5 MPaVm/s. A detailed account is given of SCK•CEN contributions to the standardization of such tests both within ASTM (revision of E1921) and ISO (preparation of a new test standard). Furthermore, the activities which took place within the Coordinated Research Project Phase 8 (CRP-8) of IAEA, topic area #2 (loading rate effects), are described in detail. The most relevant is the preliminary analysis of a round-robin exercise for the validation of Master Curve measurements on impact tested precracked Charpy specimens.
