    Abstract

The paper deals with the general radioactive waste management policy in Belgium and focuses on research and development (R&D) and design and development (D&D) activities as well as on operational and institutional organization. The main ongoing R&D and D&D programs are briefly reviewed, covering treatment and conditioning processes, characterization of final products and geological disposal. Most of these programs are carried out under contract with the Commission of the European Community. Present and future waste treatment, conditioning and disposal operations are described. The creation of a public organization NIRAS/ONDRAF is reported and its major attributions with respect to institutional, managerial and technical aspects are given.
