    Abstract

    The Mont Terri rock laboratory, situated in the vicinity of St-Ursanne, Canton Jura, Switzerland, started operation in January 1996 as part of the international Mont Terri project to which 12 organisation contribute. The aim of the project is the geological, hydrogeological, geochemical and geotechnical characterisation of the Opalinus Clay. This report presents the key results of the reasearch carried out over the first ten years of the rock laboratory. First an overview of the geology and the excavation and drilling programmes is givven followed by an overview of the scientific programme and the 78 experiments carried out in that period. The results and interpretation of key experiments and developments are given as well as an outlook on future key topics. Also the importance of the rock laboratory in developing public participation in the radioactive waste disposal project is discussed.
