    Abstract

The Gen-IV and ADS innovative reactor designs are, from the thermal-hydraulic point of view, mainly characterized by their coolants (gas, water and liquid metals). Many common thermal-hydraulic issues that require specific models and advanced analysis tools are identified among various innovative nuclear systems. These issues are the subject of the THINS (Thermal-Hydraulics of Innovative Nuclear Systems) project of EURATOMS 7th framework programme with participation of 23 partners from Europe and 1 partner from USA. The top target of the project is the development of new and more accurate physical models and numerical simulation tools. To achieve this target thirteen experimental studies are included in this project and provide test data. A large number of numerical codes are selected and numerical activities are coordinated. A tight interaction between experimental and numerical activities is established. Numerical simulation provides support to experiments, and receives test data for the improvement of numerical simulation tools. The paper descibes the objectives and status of the project after three years.
