Abstract

Most of the metal alloys exposed to the flue gases of an Al-remelting furnace failed by corrosion. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to study the corrosion behaviour of SiC and of two types of Si3N4 exposed to this aggressive atmosphere. It was concluded that the liquid potassium aluminum silicate formed on surfaces causes corrosion which reduces mechanical strength of specimens.
