Information update concerning the programme on geological disposal in Belgium: RWMC FY2005 Consultation 2 Task 1

    Abstract

    The present report has been drafted on request of the Radioactive Waste Management Funding and Research Center - RWMC – Japan and contains an overview and update of the Belgian R&D programme concerning the geological disposal of high-level and long-lived radioactive waste and spent fuel. The report provides summary information on various aspects regarding the Belgian repository development programme. The main information source upon which this report has been based is the SAFIR 2 report [1].Section 2 cointains information on the types and quantities of radioactive waste arising in the Belgian programme. A chronological overview of the main phases in the Belgian repository development programme and state-of-the-art information on the R&D programme is given in sections 3 and 4, respectively. Section 5 addresses a number of topical issues related to R&D such as retrievability/reversibilty and monitoring and gives an overview of ongoing international co-operation in R&D on geological disposal. Sections 6 outlines the legal framework while section 7 addresses the funding of the Belgian repository development programme including the cost estimate, information on the funding mechanisms and the management of the fund.
