    Abstract

FLINS, an acronym for Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in Nuclear Science, is an international research forum intended to advance the theory and applications of intelligent systems and soft computing in nuclear science and industry. In this framework, the fourth international FLINS conference on Intelligent Techniques and Soft Computing in Nuclear Science and Engineering was successfully held in Bruges, Belgium, August 28–30, 2000. The very first special issue of FLINS'94 (the first international FLINS workshop, Mol, 1994) was published in Fuzzy Sets and Systems 74, number 1, August 25, 1995. The second special issue of FLINS'96 (the second international FLINS workshop, Mol, 1996) was followed in the International Journal of Intelligent Systems 13, numbers 2/3, 1998. And the third special issue of FLINS'98 (the third international FLINS workshop, Antwerp, 1998) had recently appeared in the International Journal of General Systems 29, numbers 1/2, 2000.
