    Abstract

A report is presented on an investigation of air pollution by SO2 at ground level in an area of 120 km2 on the left bank of the river Schelde between Antwerp, Belgium, and the Dutch border that was carried out from October, 1972 till April, 1973. During this period, 3,000 half hour SO2 measurements were carried out at 130 different points by means of 2 mobile stations measuring the SO2 concentration according to the TCM method. The degree of SO2 pollution was specified per measuring zone of 1 km2 by the medium SO2 concentration and the cumulative frequency curve derived from the measuring results. On the basis of the measuring results and available meteorological data, it was also examined how the extent of SO2 pollution in the area depends on the wind direction. The method of investigation and the statistical analysis of the results are described in detail.
