    Abstract

Chemical and x-ray investigations on zirconyl phospates have led to the elucidation of some aspects of the structure of a crystalline compound with a constant phosphate/zirconium ratio of 5/3. The total capacity amounts to 4.3 ± 0.10 meq/g at pH = 7.5 and the capacity-composition curve indicates that in acid and neutral media the phosphate groups only are responsible for the exchange capacity. A crystallographic investigation has led to the determination of a cubic structure with parameter a = 9.04 A. In conjunction with density measurement it has been possible to calculate the molecular weight of one chain unit (M=878).
