Abstract
A chronopotentiometric method is proposed for the fundamental study of corrosion processes. It consists of recording, as a function of time, the evolution of the specimen surface condition, indicated by the current density or the electrode tension. In the present paper the coulometry at constant current has been chosen because tension-time curves permit an easy interpretation of the electrochemical phenomena. An apparatus has been developed which permits the measurement of reaction times of the order of 10-4-10-8 sec and accurate evaluation of the electrode tensions. The electric current source supplies currents between 10-6 and 10-2 A which are constant under all conditions; the error in the value of the current is less than 1 per cent. This method is applied to the anodization process of aluminum and its alloys. The method is particularly suited for the study of the surface condition of the specimen. A loop has been constructed which permits the same measurements with neutron and gamma irradiation in the BR1 reactor.
