By assuming that the number of conduction electrons is not perturbed by a slight hydrostatic pressure, we have computed the nuclear energy shift of the 14.4keV gamma ray of Fe^{57 }resulting from compression in an iron crystal. The atomic wave functions are those of the free atom but they are no longer allowed to extend to infinity : they are limited to the Wigner-Seltz polyhedron. For a pressure of 3000 kg/cm^{2} the calculated shift is 0.83 x 10^{-10} eV as compared to the experimental value of 1.12 x10^{-10 }eV obtained by POUND.
