    Abstract

By assuming that the number of conduction electrons is not perturbed by a slight hydrostatic pressure, we have computed the nuclear energy shift of the 14.4 KeV gamma ray of Fe57 resulting from compression in an iron crystal. The atomic wave functions are those of the free atom but they are no longer allowed to extend to infinity: they are limited to the Wigner‐Seitz polyhedron. For a pressure of 3000 kg/cm2 the calculated shift is 0.83 × 10−10 eV as compared to the experimental value of 1.12 × 10−10 eV obtained by POUND.
