    Abstract

Repository performance assessment requires defensible assumptions about the future state of engineered barriers (EB). Because of the overwhelming complexity of degradation mechanisms that affect the long-term performance of EB, simplified concepts have to be built in conceptual and numerical models. In this paper we discuss how such degradation processes were simplified and conceptualised into a series of models used in safety assessment (SA).
