Abstract

On the one hand the construction, the calibration and the reproductibility of an apparatus to measure the magnetic susceptibility of small solid samples are described in this report. The optimal measuring ranges are : 10-8 e.m.u. > m.x>10-9 e.m.u., 85°K< T<300°K and 6.103 oersted < H< 17.103 oersted. On the other hand data of thermal neutron irradiated LiF single crystals are discussed. The suspectibility may be explained as composed of three parts:1. the diamagnetic part of the normal LiF matrix,2. a temperature dependent paramagnetic part obeying the Curle law due to unpaired electrons,3. a temperature independent paramagnetic part attributed to metallic lithium ; the precipitation of this metal phase is discussed.
