Martian Habitat Design: A user optimized design

    Research output

    Abstract

Due to the increase in interest in human exploration of space, the possibility of putting humans on Mars nears. To be able to stay on Mars humans need a habitat that would protect them from the harsh Martian environment. Over the last few years we have seen competitions pop up to design Martian habitats. We have seen multiple beautiful designs from architecture firms. However, there is a lack in feasible habitat designs. As such with this thesis I wanted to provide a first step in creating such a design. Another important part that is rather lacking in the space industry is taking the user experience into account. This is extremely important as a Mars mission would have a substantial duration. Creating an environment that creates a positive user experience boosts efficiency and overall morale. Thus I wanted to create a realistic concept that would be able to provide a positive experience for the inhabitants. In addition to the desk research I participated in an analogue space mission. This provided new insights and opportunities to adjust the design and create a more realistic and accurate concept.
