Abstract
After a brief introduction describing the general background of the current activities performed in order to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy, an outline is presented of the major materials problems which remain to be solved. Special attention is paid to irradiation effects in candidate first wall alloys and to simulation techniques which the materials scientist has to apply in order to understand the underlying mechanisms.
