Migration in Clay: experiments and models

Research outputpeer-review

Abstract

After describing the basic concepts of transport in soils, leading to the advection/diffusion equation, an overview is given of five types of migration experiments allowing to measure the migration parameters: the apparent disperion (diffusion) coefficient and the product R of the accessible porosity  and the retardation factor R. For each type of experiment, one or more models, allowing to fit the experimental data, are described. Consistency checks are performed between the results obtained with the different types of experiments and their corresponding models, with the aim to enhance confidence in these results and to show where there are still problems.
