Abstract
This paper gives an overview of different constraints related to communication about NORM, highlighting common stakeholder involvement failures in different remediation processes involving NORM. It presents case studies and solutions derived from lessons learned from NORM contamination in Europe in general and from mixed contamination (chemical and radiological) in Belgium in particular. Our purpose is to demonstrate the need to openly and transparently communicate with the public about radioactivity, to involve stakeholders in decisions related to NORM and to show that risk communication and stakeholder involvement are not only “mission possible”, but also “mission unavoidable”.
