    Abstract

The PhD thesis covers various topics related to MSW landfill. The following objectives have been achieved: 1) Physical, mechanical, hydraulic, and gaseous characteristic study of waste at Coll Cardus landfill in Spain by means of large-scale unit weight tests, pumping test and loading plate tests and so forth. 2) Development of an analytical model to calculate settlement of MSW landfill by considering the layered features and employing viscoelastic mechanics. The model satisfactorily reproduced the settlement measurements at several MSW landfills. 3) Quasi-three-dimensional analysis of slope stability of Coll Cardus landfill; influence of water level, elapsed time, and unit weight on the safety factor. 4) Analytical solutions for gas flow around the extraction well, which are very valuable for LFG controlling. The achieved models, methods and parameters are very valuable for the design and maintenance of the MSW landfills.
