Abstract

The main principles of Chemical thermodynamics, with special emphasis on those concepts which are of interest to Ion exchange reactions, are reviewed in the first chapter. The elements of the physical chemistry of electrolytic Solutions are discussed in the second chapter including the theories of Debye-MuckeI and Guggenheim. The physical chemistry of sorption reactions is subsequently treated in the third chapter where the adsorption as welI as ion exchange reactions from the general point of view of heterogeneous are looked at chemical equilibria in two phase systems. The fourth and fifth chapter contain the most important quantitative approaches to ion exchange equilibria in substances with a rigid matrix and in gel type ion exchangers ; the formal thermodynamic treatments are particularly emphasized since they constitute the connection between the thermodynamic parameters and the equilibrium data, The fundamentals of Ion exchange kinetics are discussed In the sixth chapter and the calculation methods of the performances of ion exchange columns are extensively treated in the seventh chapter. Finally a short section is devoted to ion exchange equilibria involving trace components.
