Numerical Modeling of the In Situ "Praclay Seal Test". Comparison between Model and Measurement.

    Research outputpeer-review

    Abstract

The Praclay test program, operated in the URF (Underground Research Facility) in Mol, Belgium, investigates the effects of a heated gallery on the surrounding Boom Clay. A seal structure isolates this gallery from the other galleries. The annular seal basically consists of compacted bentonite blocks contained in a steel structure. Model calculations simulate the coupled Hydro-Mechanical processes in the seal, as well as the interaction among the Boom Clay, bentonite blocks and steel structure. The first effort to compare the modeling with the measurements shows a reasonably good agreement and highlights the capability of the model to reproduce the main features of the test.
