Abstract
A method is described whereby the nature of stacking faults in f.c.c. structures can be determined from the bright field image and the fine structure of the diffraction spots. The method is applied to stainless steel where the faults are found to be intrinsic. The procedure can easily be extended to similar problems where the slope of a planar interface has to be determined.
