    Abstract

The reorientation of M-centers in additively colored KCl crystals, due to the absorption of polarized F-light is studied experimentally. The time dependence of the resulting dichroism can be described by either one, or two relaxation times, depending upon the geometry. This agrees with the theoretical predictions of a previous paper [21]. From the values of the relaxation times obtained at 200 °K, it is concluded that absorption of MF [001] photons indices a rotation of the M-center with a quantum efficiency which is approximately three times as large as that associated with absorption of MF [011] photons. The temperature dependence of the quantum efficiency for the process can be described by an activation energy of a few hundredths of an eV.
