Abstract
Large-scale MOX use in nuclear power plants is considered or implemented in various countries in order to idecrease the long-term burden of radioactive waste and the proliferation risks of the storage of plutonium. The dismantling of nuclear warheads will create another stockpile of plutonium that one could like to diminish. Consequently, there is a need to develop or to improve the in-core management codes and to benchmark and to validate them against experimental data with respect to MOX-fuel. Based on 25 years of experience, SCK and BN execute international programmes dedicated to LWR-users concerned with Pu-recycle strategies. Some experiments have been performed with MOX having Pu-vector of 92 % 239Pu, 8 % 240Pu. The most recent of these programmes (VIP, VIPO, VIPEX, VENUS-NBN) executed in the VENUS, a critical facility for benchmark experiments, are described in this paper. A proposal is made for a programme with MOX fuel containing military plutonium.
