Abstract

Epidemiological evidence has established an increased risk of cardiovascular disease following exposure of the heart and major vessels to radiation doses above 500mGy. Whilst the evidence for a detrimental effect at lower doses is inconclusive there are justifiable concerns that a linear no-threshold dose response relationship would indicate risk at doses below 100 mGy. The PROCARDIO consortium has completed a two-pronged approach, conducting an epidemiological case-control study with improved dosimetry and conducting experimental investigation into possible mechanisms.
