Abstract

The Radioisotopes Department of S.C.K./C.E.N. (Belgium) - SORIN (Italy) association for the production of radioelements and labelled compounds, ensures an important part of the production of high specific activity iridium-192 sources for industrial use.
The study of the installations designed for this production consisted in foreseeing the possibility to absorb activities up to 2000 curies of this radioelement, all along the various steps of manipulation. Data of the installation are as follows.
1) Conditioning. - A cell was especially conceived as a function of the various operations required.
2) Measuring. - For most of the radioisotope applications it is necessary to know the activity of the sources used with the closest possible precision. This control of the activity must be non-destructive and furthermore, the range of activities to be measured may vary in the case of iridium-192 from ± 9 Ci to ±300 Ci per source. The method used and described in this report allows the measuring of sources with a precision of ± 2% .
3) Storage. - The total activities manipulated amounting to ± 2000 Ci per month, an easy and simple storage allowing to operate under perfect conditions of security is necessary.
