Abstract

The possible use of thin HxWO3 films as a reference electrode in a Nernst type hydrogen sensor is investigated. Thin WO3 films have been prepared by reactive dc magnetron sputtering from a tungsten target in an oxygen atmosphere. The structure and homogeneity of the films are investigated by x - ray diffraction and ion scattering spectroscopy. After intercalation of hydrogen in the WO3 films by cathodic reaction in H2SO4, we studied the influence on the open circuit potential of the hydrogen concentration in the electrolyte and the hydrogen mole fraction in HxWO3.
