Abstract

Some aspects are described of the initial stage of oxidation of niobium. It is shown how the process takes place by a nucleation mechanism in the interior of the metal, The nuclei themselves are composed of parallel platelets in strictly crystaI1ographic directions. They grow together to form a particular cross-hatched pattern.
