Abstract
Space-borne optical systems must be tolerant to radiation to guarantee that the required systems performance is maintained during prolonged mission times. We show that the radiation hardness can be improved by selecting the relevant glass from a group of optical analogs. This conclusion is based on the study of gamma-radiation-induced absorption of crown glasses from group 517640 (glasses with nd~1.517 and vd~64)-BK7 and NBK7 (Schott), S-BSL7 (Ohara), BSC 517642 (Pilkington), and K8 (NITIOM). Our results show that whereas these glasses are optical analogs before irradiation, they behave differently during and after irradiation.
