Abstract
Based on some mathematical manipulations of the properties of the lognormal distribution it is shown that certain sampling schemes can give the most important part of the information one is looking for in many air pollution monitoring networks. The soundness of the theoretical conclusions is illustrated by means of different practical examples taken from existing non-automatic as well as from automatic monitoring networks.
