Abstract
Attention is drawn to the difficulty of calculating the effectiveness of neutron shields, resulting in particular from the complexity of the phenomenon of neutron interaction with matter. The possible interactions are classified either as slowing down or as absorbing, leading to a description of elastic and inelastic diffusion. The interest in hydrogen as a slowing down material, and the risk of emission of parasitic gamma rays during the interaction processes is described. The paper ends with some practical data and a schematic explanation of the application of the theoretical considerations.
