Abstract
The principle of the measurement of the static magnetic susceptibility is more than a hundred years old. Present-day research in this field therefore Is character I zed by the modern possibilities at the construction of an apparatus and at the preparation of new materials. An apparatus, designed to measure smalI samples in fields of a strength as high as 17 kOe and at temperatures between 61° and 300° K, is briefly discussed. lts main part is an automatized torsion balance with a sensitivity of about 0.6 μg.
The data obtained on a 1.02 mg single crystal of the antiferromagnetic K2NiF4 are given and found to be in accordance with the data available in the literature.
