Abstract
Currently closed for major refurbishment, BR2 is expected to serve its international users for another 15 years upon a new start-up by early 1997. The work done during the shutdown is described, including the refurbishments of the beryllium matrix, the pressure vessel, the primary circuit, the instrumentation and control, and the support systems. Other modifications include upgrade of the fire protection system, crane handling systems, and containment isolation valves; extensive maintenance of the cooling towers; and installment of a new purification plant for the supplying of secondary water to avoid releases. An update of the current progress is presented.
